Community Service

Mark your calendars now to participate with your child in this year’s community service activities. Parent and student volunteers are vital to the success of these projects.

This year’s events include sandwich-making for the hungry and homeless served by Martha’s Table in Washington, DC; the holiday gift drive to benefit families at our buddy school, Dogwood Elementary, in Reston; a used book drive, and a drive to support SHARE, which assists the needy in Northern Virginia.

Holiday Toy Drive for Dogwood:

December 3rd through 7th 2018. Dogwood Elementary is our sister school in Reston, Virginia. Dogwood is a Title I school - the poverty rate is approximately 80%, which means 80% of the students receive free and reduced meals. Over the past several years, the CRS PTA has held a toy drive for the students of poverty at Dogwood. With the toys from the drive, Dogwood's parent liaisons hold a "Holiday Shop" prior to winter break to allow parents to shop for one gift for each of their Dogwood students. The Holiday Shop has provided nearly 400 students with gifts each year. You can learn more about the drive and Dogwood in this presentation (PDF viewer required).

    • Sign up to help collect gifts from the collection bins in the morning from 12/3-12/7 or to help deliver gifts to Dogwood on 12/7.
    • Find all the details about our annual toy drive, including shopping guidance and toy suggestions here.

Used Book Drive

  • Spring 2019, Date TBA
  • Gently used books and board games donations are collected in grey bins located throughout the school. All CRS teachers are invited to browse the donated items to add to their classroom libraries. Any books not taken by CRS staff will be donated to Dogwood Elementary.

SHARE Drive

  • Spring 2019, Date TBA
  • SHARE of McLean has been helping local families and our community since 1969.
  • Donations will be collected on TBA in the grey Community Service bins located around the school (front lobby, cafeteria, gym, etc.). A list of suggested items most needed by SHARE will be provided prior to the start of the collection period.

There are many ways your family can participate, such as donating food for sandwich making and the SHARE drive; helping to make sandwiches after school; and collecting, sorting, and delivering holiday gifts for families at our buddy school. As these events draw closer, we’ll be seeking volunteers. Look for more information throughout the school year in PTA Communications (email, social), the Churchill Chatter and your child’s VIP folder. Your time, attention and enthusiasm are greatly appreciated.
