Debate Club with Mr. Walsh
There is a thrill in rising to speak. You have an idea to defend, an audience to persuade, and you strive to find exactly the right words. Nothing readies and hones the mind like preparing to stand up and make an argument. Mr. Walsh invites students to join an after-school club devoted to the lively and honorable art of debate. Before becoming a teacher, Mr. Walsh practiced law; long before that, he debated as a member of his high school’s junto debate club. Mr. Walsh is a seasoned public speaker. He will coach students as they build their argument, marshal evidence, write persuasively, speak from prepared notes, and think on their feet when the unexpected question arrives. He will advise students on their presentation and their articulation of their ideas. Successful debaters, of course, are profound listeners so Mr. Walsh will also coach students on actively listening to one another to find angles of rebuttal and vulnerability. As students learn to listen, they answer ideas with ideas and they practice the essential skill of disagreeing without being disagreeable. Debate also prepares students for the life-long skills of speaking on your feet in front of an audience. McLean, specifically, prides itself on a tradition of diplomacy and peacemaking, and debate is excellent preparation for participating thoughtfully and confidently in that tradition. With debate programs waiting at Cooper Middle School and Langley High School (where Mr. Krivak has state championship banners adorning the walls) this club offers young speakers a spirited place to begin a first chapter of a lifelong engagement with argument, advocacy, and public life.

PSA: Structural Builds
Students become young engineers by designing and building exciting creations using materials like cardboard, craft sticks, paper, straws, and recycled materials. Weekly challenges may include building bridges, towers, castles, mazes, boats, or miniature homes while students learn the basics of engineering, teamwork, and creative problem-solving. These hands-on projects encourage critical thinking, collaboration, and innovation in a fun, engaging setting.

PSA: DIY Crafts
Students create fun, hands-on projects they can personalize and take home, such as friendship bracelets, decorated pencil holders, painted picture frames, canvas art, and other creative keepsakes. Projects encourage self-expression, creativity and give students something they're proud to share with their families.

Bobcat Theater
Presented by the National Children's Theatre, Inc., participants (grades 3-6) prepare a Jr. version of a Broadway musical performed in the late spring. Rehearsals provide students with intensive vocal, acting, and dance training.
Chess Club
Our popular chess club is for students in grades 2 to 6. Instructors from the U.S. Chess Center teach chess to improve our students' academic and social skills, emphasizing sportsmanship and learning to think.
Girls on the Run
Girls on the Run (GOTR) is for girls in grades 3-6. Practices combine an innovative and fun curriculum designed for pre-teen girls. The goal is to encourage positive emotional, social, mental, and physical development.
Math ClubS
Math Kangaroo and MATHCOUNTS Program. Both programs heighten students' interests in mathematics by making mathematical achievement challenging and exciting.
Science Olympiad
Science Olympiad offers students the opportunity to improve their understanding of STEM and work together in teams to learn new skills. Division B is for grades 5-6, and Division A is for grades 3-5.
