Notes:
1. AART - Resources Christine Neubauer, Ester Lee
2. Talent Development and Differentiation as 2 divisions of the program
3. TD - Critical Thinking strategies, students exploring areas of interest
4. Differentiation : Meet students by name and need, different pace, peer to peer feedback to promote growth
5. Local Building Norms : Started in 2021, matching services to students needs. Data is being used from the schools and then assessed for AAP needs.
6. Honors class is open to everyone and can pick their areas of interest
7. Elementary Schools :
- Full time AAP
- available for Grades 3-6
- Students who are eligible receive accelerated pace, high intensity
- 3 ways to screening - Family Referral, Staff Referral, Universal Screener Referral
- County decides the Universal Screener, CogAt, iready, county sends the list to school as referral
- There is no precedence on referral process
- Families can submit the Full Time AAP forms ( available on the website) - Due for the entire school on Dec 15th (exceptions for new families, Oct 15th ( fall screening))
- Part Time AAP deadline is also the same
- Grade 2 - Students will be referred but the universal screening along with the other referrals - County Driven
- What if the student is not referred though county but through others
- Screening Portfolio is created, sent to AAP office, the decision is then taken at the central screening ( committee does not include anyone from the local school)
- Screening Portfolio includes (screenshot attached) - Work samples (4 min, 6max)
- Quarter 1 and Quarter 2 reports are evaluated, SOL scores, iready scores
- Work Samples - They show the students thinking, e.g If they built something innovative, they had a vision and purpose for it, could be writing, art. Wht is Not a work sample - Trophies, Instruments they play, audios, videos
- Work samples defining challenges, thinking
- Submit the samples before 15th, and they would let the parents know if the samples dont work
- Best Practices - Universal screening, holistic review of multiple data points, use of tools that are inclusive of diverse cultures, HOPE surveys (filled by teachers)
- HOPE Gifted Rating Scale - Rated in social and academic areas
- Ability Tests - Test scores alone is not valid, NNAT (1st Grade), CoGAT ( 2nd Grade) - Information on the website
- Family Input - Contributions involves information that schools may not have
- Referral Form - Dec 15th
- Families may submit 2 pages of student work samples
- Request to convert to Jpeg, pDF
- Parent Questionnaire- This can also be filled out, specific examples can be provided, form available on the website
- Last question is important - Can let the committee know about any disability or needs special attention. Only parents can provide this information
- Screening Portfolio can be shared upon request only after all the process is completed
- Email will be sent out to the enrolling parent about the AAP, and directions on how to accept placement, information on orientation dates will be shared
- Contact the committee if you do not know who the enrolling parent is
- Parents are notified if the student is ineligible, information about the appeal process will be available
- Appeal Process - Students can be screened again, submit a referral again, and can apply the following year.
- Presentation will be available on the website
- CRS uses AAP resources across the school
Questions:
1. 2nd Grade samples are preferred over K, Dec 15th
2. No cutoff on the number of students
3. Submit the samples to front office with the names of committee, email or paper in a package
4. Full time teachers are available at CRS
5. Is the process the same for Part Time? - Parents can submit single subject referrals, but emphasis on Advanced Maths
6. All the deadlines will be made available on the information or eligibility email
7. Request is to not wait for the Screening results but still submit the referral forms ahead of time
8. School size almost remains the same, but could have an addition of 5-6 students
9. Once the child is determined full time, the eligibility is valid till grade 8 - Prents can however defer it for the student
10. Honors and AAP are similar
11. If there is no record, the students will be retested
12. 140 has been the cutoff in the previous years for CoGAT but this is only for CRS
13. When the parents start the referral, the process starts.
14. Parents can let teachers know that the parents are interested in the AAP so they can collect the work samples
15. How does the AAP classes impact the kids - Kids get mixed up, but there are a lot of specials, science math classes are physically different
16. Beyond 2nd Grade - Parent referral is the only way to enroll for AAP
17. Year before + Current 2 quarters are used for Progress Reports
18. Having a diverse work sample is beneficial
